Zimbabwe: A country full of disasters

While all eyes are still focussed on Mugabe and Tsvangirai struggling in forming a new government, a new disaster reveals itself in Zimbabwe; and this time it is a humanitarian one. In the same way as the violated Democratic Republic of Congo is suffering at the moment, an outbreak of Cholera hits Zimbabwe. It is the biggest Zimbabwean epidemic since 2000. Ban Ki-Moon even said he was "alarmed that the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe is now desperate and will worsen in the coming months".

Anarchy in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The latest violent outbreak in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is still trying to recover from a lengthy civil war, led to approximately 300,000 newly displaced people since August 2008. Fighting evolved among government troops, militia groups, and rebel forces led by Laurent Nkunda. UN Peacekeeping forces are meanwhile struggling to protect civilians and avoid another humanitarian catastrophe in the region.

Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015?

In 2000, the United Nations have issued the Millennium Development Goals which should be achieved by 2015. The Millennium Development Goals can be comprised as eight different objectives. These objectives are first, Ending poverty and hunger; Second, Universal Education; Third, Gender Equality; Fourth, Child Health; Fifth, Maternal Health; Sixth, Combat HIV/AIDS; Seventh, Environmental Sustainability and Eighth Global Partnership.

Today, in 2008, a little more than half of the 15 years planned to achieve the Millennium Goals have passed. Therefore, it would be interesting to have a closer look on the single goals and in how far they have been achieved by now.

UN Interactive Panel on Financial Crisis

In the face of the current financial crisis, the UN set up a task force to tackle the problems imposed on the international markets by the worst financial crisis since 1929.

On October 30, an interactive panel on the global financial crisis was held at the UN headquarters in New York.
